Why are you promoting unhealthy living?

Recently, I’ve been honored to be featured on media outlets such as KSAT, KABB, and WOAI. I am so grateful for the chance to share my story. It has always been my hope that my story inspires someone out there. I know what it is like to be at rock bottom without any hope in sight and my intention is to be that beacon of hope for my fellow hermana. I want to show her that the impossible is very possible and you can truly change your reality. Most importantly, I want her to realize that her size shouldn’t stop her from living her best life.

I should’ve known better than to think that everyone would “get it”. Along with extremely positive feedback and well wishes, there has been a significant amount of negative feedback. I made the mistake of reading the comments on social media posts featuring my story. Some of the comments truly made me laugh. “She should be called Miss Gordita”. I actually totally agree with this one. Because everyone wants a gordita, right? (insert winky face emoji) “She’s the reason why Charles Barkley talks about San Antonio women”. First of all, who’s worried about Charles Barkley? I’ve been in the press more than he has lately so there’s that. I did see one comment made several times and this one got to me. “She’s promoting obesity and unhealthy living”. “We shouldn’t award a lack of self discipline”. “She’s showing the world its ok to be lazy”.

Those comments I have a problem with and this blog is specifically to those people who made those comments. You guys totally missed the point. I am not promoting obesity. Being overweight does come with serious health issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes. I admit that personally I struggle with hypertension. Of course, I am under the care of a physician who helps me control my blood pressure. Of course, at every single visit he encourages me to lose weight. OF COURSE, weight loss is a huge part of my life. I’m not blind to the risks associated with being overweight and yes, they weigh heavily on my mind (pun intended). I know what I’m doing in regards to that. I do want to clarify that a dramatic 100 pound weight loss is not my goal. My weight loss goal is to be as healthy as possible to avoid conditions like hypertension or diabetes. My goal in regards to weight loss is NOT to prove anything to the haters. The point of my mission is to show the world that you can do anything regardless of your size. I love myself exactly as I am. You should too.

I did learn a lesson from the negative feedback. I feel a sense of responsibility and I want to say that the risks associated with being overweight are very real. I am not encouraging obesity. I am not saying that it’s ok to be unhealthy or overweight BUT you don’t have to be a size 2 to live your best life either.

Con mucho carino,
